Aotearoa is the Maori name for New Zealand.
Maori settled New Zealand some thousand years ago as Polynesian people voyaged the Pacific and made landfall in the far-flung corners of the region. Situated in the southwest corner of the Pacific Ocean, New Zealand is an ancient land imbued with myths and legends.
One third of New Zealand is held in national parks and conservation areas where the land, flora and fauna are protected for future generations.
New Zealand is made up of two large islands, North Island (in Maori it is called "Maui") and South Island ("Pounamu") and a number of smaller off-lying islands. Obviously for boaters, this is a beautiful destination for sailboat shipping and other tranquil pursuits.
The North Island is rolling, green and temperate and the South Island is more mountainous and cooler. The warmer months are from November to April.
The beauty and variety of the coast, as well as the challenging sailing conditions, are explantions why New Zealand attracts so many people and is a frequent port area for our sailboat shipping services.
Mountains, glaciers, bubbling hot pools, giant ferns, long, deserted beaches and a unique wildlife are some examples of New Zealand's fascinating nature.

Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand, is situated on a splendid harbour at the southern tip of the North Island.
Wellington is a lively city of culture and arts (with festivals almost every month), and great ethnic restaurants and cafes.
The largest city in New Zealand is Auckland with a population of 345,000.

How to get there
Most international flights to New Zealand go through Auckland.
Direct flights connect to and from west coast USA, east coast Australia and Perth, London and Frankfurt and several cities in Asia.
A number of domestic airlines connect Auckland with other major centres in New Zealand.
Auckland airport is 21 km (13 mi) southwest of the city centre and airport shuttles run to several accommodation places and Aotea Square in the city.
There are regular bus services between Auckland and almost all bigger towns and main tourist areas; they operate from the Sky City Coach Terminal on Hobson St. Trains arrive at and depart from Auckland train station on Beach Rd, about 1 km (0.6 mi) east of the city centre. There's a daily early morning train and overnight train to Wellington. Hiring a car and driving around New Zealand is easy.
A valid, unrestricted driver's licence from your home country is required, and don't forget that in New Zealand they drive on the left.

Weather
New Zealand has a subtropical climate in the North and a temperate climate in the South.
The North has no extremes of heat or cold but winter can be quite cool in the South, with snow in the mountains.
The eastern areas often experience drought conditions in summer; the West, particularly in the South Island, has more rain.
Best months to visit New Zealand are mid September through October, when the flowers and trees are in bloom.
Auckland experiences every type of weather sometimes even all in the same day, as it is situated on an isthmus and near the tropical weather patterns of the Pacific islands.
Winter (June-September) is a mixed bag of seasons:
Warm westerly winds often make some winter days mild, but other days can be cold and very rainy. It never gets cold enough to snow (even frosts are rare). Average winter temperatures are around 58 F/13 C, though they can vary greatly.
Spring months are also unpredictable, either wonderfully calm and sunny or a tumultuous jumble of rain, cold and heat.
Summer months (December-March) offer the most consistent weather.
Average temperatures then rise to 75 F/24 C. Rain showers are less frequent but still very common.
