The captain’s craft: strong crews and seamless yacht transport

Life as a yacht captain requires far more than navigating from one destination to another. Leadership, clear communication, and strong teamwork are essential to keep both vessel and crew operating at their best.

In this interview, Capt. Graham Lloyd, captain of M/Y Rio, shares his perspective on life at sea, building strong crews, and the importance of reliable yacht transport in an industry that operates across oceans.

With nearly a decade of experience as a captain, Lloyd has seen how seamless logistics play a crucial role in keeping yachts moving between the world’s major cruising regions.

Seamless yacht transport around the world

Operating yachts internationally often means moving them efficiently between destinations such as the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. For many captains, yacht transport has become an essential part of planning a successful season.

Capt. Lloyd has worked with DYT Yacht Transport for more than ten years, coordinating shipments for yachts as well as tenders and chase boats.

For him, reliability and clear communication are what make the difference during transport operations.

“You’re never left guessing. Everything is clearly communicated, from where to position the boat to who to contact once you arrive.”

That level of clarity allows captains and crew to focus on the operation itself, knowing the logistics are handled professionally.

A career built at sea

Capt. Lloyd has been working as a yacht captain for nearly ten years. After starting his career in the private sector, he now operates in the commercial yachting environment.

The role has taken him across the globe, working in destinations that many people only experience during holidays.

“You visit places where people spend a lot of money to go on vacation, and you get to work there. You meet people from all over the world and build an incredible network of friends in the industry.”

The important of strong crews

For Capt. Lloyd, the success of any yacht operation ultimately depends on the strength of the crew.

Clear rules, fairness and consistency are essential for maintaining a professional environment on board. Regardless of personal relationships, expectations need to apply to everyone equally.

That approach helps create trust within the team and ensures the crew can operate efficiently, especially during demanding operations or long seasons.

Lessons in leadership

Like many captains, Lloyd learned valuable leadership lessons early in his career.

At first he sometimes leaned too far toward a relaxed approach with crew members. Over time, he realised that maintaining clear authority and structure on board is essential.

Those early experiences helped shape the leadership style he uses today

Leadership, teamwork and trust

Capt. Graham Lloyd’s story highlights the balance between leadership, teamwork and logistics that defines modern yachting.

From managing strong crews to coordinating seamless yacht transport across oceans, his experience reflects the many moving parts that keep the industry running.

In an industry that operates on a global scale, trust, communication and consistency remain essential for captains, crews and the partners who support them.
